Grain Size Determination
Grain Size is determined in accordance with ASTM E112, which requires that a specimen be polished, etched, and photographically documented prior to conducting this form of quantitative metallography. Some of different methods for grain size determination are as follows:
- Abrams Method, which is a circular intercept procedure that employs three concentric, equally-spaced circles.
- Hayn Lineal Intercept Method, which employs the use of straight lines sufficiently long to yield at least 50 intercepts.
- Comparison Method, which employs ASTM-certifed charts of specimen photomicrographs with ASTM grain sizes in the range of 0 to 12.
